Ask Lesbow Dash: Gender in MLP.

rainbowdash-likesgirls:

The most important lesson I’ve learned from Friendship is Magic is that your gender doesn’t dictate the way you have to be. You don’t have to consistently conform to one side of the gender binary, and because you may have one “feminine” characteristic doesn’t mean you don’t have other “masculine”…

((I feel like reblobbing this, so yeah.))

Okay, okay, I was born female and I know I'm definitely pansexual. But I do not like to do anything feminine. In fact, I loathe it when my mother forces me to dress feminine for special occasions and such. I don't even care what gender people call me (although since childhood, I've always wanted to be a boy). I didn't think I was transgender or genderfluid or whatever it really is called, but I think I am. Does it sound like I am?

((First off, transgender, genderqueer and genderfluid are different things. Transgender means your true gender is the opposite of your birth-assigned sex. Genderqueer means your gender identity and/or expression does not align with typical ideas of your sex. Genderfluid is a specific type of genderqueerness in which your gender identity and expression vary. Now, if your gender expression does not align with typical ideas of femininity but you feel like a girl, you’re gender non-conforming or genderqueer. If your gender identity as well is not feminine or you don’t feel like a girl, you’re definitely genderqueer. If you still absolutely want to be a boy and feel your true identity is as a man, you’re trans.))

I am female, but sometimes I get the desire to present myself in a masculine fashion, though probably more of the time I present myself in a feminine fashion. (Probably about 70% of the time?) Also I don't care about what pronouns people use for me. Is this super abnormal? No one else I talk to really feels this way, so I don't know...

((It’s completely normal, you actually sound a lot like me! You’re genderqueer, specifically genderfluid—your gender expression is fluid. Now, mine is a little different, I’m a feminine straight boy in a woman’s body. I really do prefer male pronouns even though I present myself usually in a feminine way. Remember people—gender expression and gender identity are separate.))

((This might help clarify things a little.))

What would you do if you turned herm for a day and would you be willing to magically turn into a herm for the rest of your life?

((“Intersex” please, not “herm”. Well. I’ve done a lot of questioning of my gender, and at this point, my best answer is genderfluid—sometimes I’m a girl and sometimes I’m a boy. I’ve thought of transitioning, but unfortunately, I’d still have the same problem. I’m best described as “a straight drag queen in a woman’s body”, which is fun about 80% of the time, and the other 20%, it feels like I’m in a costume that I can’t take off and be the real me. So, in answer to your question, if I was intersex for a day, I would probably go about my normal life. But I would probably not choose, if I could, to be intersex forever because it wouldn’t fix my gender issues.))

I would totally get a full sex-change operation just so I could think I even have a chance to be with you.

I’ll try to be polite with this… that’s not something to make light of. You could not live as the sex that does not correlate with your true gender. You would be absolutely miserable, every day of your life, living a lie, just as transgender people do every day before they find the proper way to express themselves.

Howdy there, are ya'll really a mare?

I’m not sure sometimes…

.

Most people would say yes though, because I have, um, mareparts.

I think that saying Rainbow Dash is a lesbian brings on hurtful stereotypes to tomboys and people who like boy things. I used to be a tomboy and was made fun of by these hurtful stereotypes and trust me, it stinks. I wish the bronys would just stop. Bring on the hate, delt with it a lot back in the day. 12/20/11

The solution to this is to destigmatize LGBT*, not to say tomboys can’t be lesbians because it’s “stereotypical”. The responsibility to stop prejudice lies upon the oppressors, not the oppressed.
